Last Minute Stocking Stuffer Alert!

Still need a few little items for those style-savvy ladies in your life? Do them a solid and grab a few Mixed Chicks Dent & Tangle-free Spring Bands to throw in their stocking.

These telephone cord looking bands are perfect for all types of hair, and leave hair kink and tangle free. They're available in light yellow, clear light pink, clear aqua blue, clear amber and clear black.

As a gal with frustratingly fine tresses, these little wonders still did a fantastic job of keeping my hair back for the entire day. I especially loved how the shape of the bands really allowed for a great messy bun or topknot.

I also passed a few along to a pal with completely a completely different hair type than mine and every time I've seen her in a pony tail since, she's been rocking the Mixed Chicks!

Another great stocking stuffer option from this awesome brand is their namesake shampoo, deep conditioner and leave-in conditioner. They gently clean and condition straight, wavy or curly hair and smell like a dream.
I enjoyed a nice little sampler trio!

Mixed Chicks is an all-around amazing company dedicated to women of all ethnicities and backgrounds. They celebrate the fact that "we not only come from everywhere, but we are going everywhere."

And on those adventures, it's always nice to have an extra dependable hair band or two!

Mixed Chicks Shampoo, Deep Conditioner and Leave-In Conditioner can also be found on their website.

Hey Dude! Sweet Hair!

When I asked my (insanely gorgeous) husband to test out Redken for Men Full Impact Bodyfying Shampoo, I promised that (brilliant, amazing) guy two things: first of all, his (already perfectly perfect) hair would get a treat, as Redken boasts a plumping, volumizing, and lifting formula in this wash (my husband rocks!). Secondly, I vowed to sing my (sexy, strong) husband's praises on the internet, in return for his (manly, oh so manly) services. Have I mentioned what a fantastic husband I have?

The love of my life reported that he definitely felt a boost in volume and control with this shampoo. He was most excited about the scent of the stuff! He said that it has a "refreshing, sweet smell". I agree. This product certainly made my already delicious smelling man, smell that much sweeter.

Husband tested. Wife approved.

Unite 7 Seconds Dry Shampoo

A wise hairdresser once told me that washing my hair every day would eventually murder my color treated locks. Since that day, I have committed to washing every other day and on a rare occasion, rocking out a third-day-dirty do...not without a heavy head and greasy hair line though.

Thank the stars for this stuff! Unite's dry shampoo does exactly what it promises, unlike other dry shampoos I have tried in the past. This quick, easy solution to a non-wash day is ideal for those of you trying to preserve your own natural oils like me, a gal on the go, campers, athletes, or simply to freshen things up after a long day.

Pureology goes to Zero!

Beginning February 1, Pureology’s NEW Zero Waste Shampoo and Hair Conditioner Packaging (with the same great concentrated formulas) will be available in Pureology salons nationwide!

NEW Zero Waste Packaging:
-         Highly concentrated ZeroSulfate® 250mL shampoos offer 70+ shampoos per bottle.

-         Made with 50% post-consumer recycled High-density polyethylene (HDPE) materials for unparalleled safety and environmental sustainability (double the amount of PCR used before).

-         For secondary packaging, Pureology decreased the amount of cardboard and uses Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified cardboard boxes made from 100% recycled fibers.  Pureology also added educational messages to these boxes, reminding purchasers to recycle the box and providing tips on how they can conserve water.

-         Don’t forget, the new 250 ml shampoo and condition bottles are 100% recyclable, so be sure to recycle once the formulas is done!

Since Pureology was founded in 2001 the brand has been the leader in superior colour care products made with 100 percent vegan and organic botanical ingredients, while upholding its promise to care for the well-being of the environment.  As a brand with a sustainable vision, Pureology continually works to reduce its environmental impacts through efficient production and manufacturing processes and by incorporating more environmentally preferred materials.  This year, Pureology announces that recent improvements to its Shampoo and Hair Conditioner packaging are helping reduce its environmental impacts.

“Pureology’s new Zero Waste Shampoo and Hair Conditioner Packaging allows consumers and stylists to use every last drop of product and the new ergonomic design featuring inverted condition bottles ensures ease-of-use,” states Shae Kalyani, Vice President of US Marketing for Pureology. “Throughout the packaging renovation, our formulas have not changed – we offer the same luxurious, concentrated formulas color-coded systems for each regimen.”

To quantify the success of these and other improvements, Pureology commissioned Five Winds International, a sustainability management consulting firm, to conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA) of Pureology’s Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner, products that are representative of Pureology’s entire line and are the brand’s best-sellers.  The process assessed the impact these changes have on reducing the environmental impacts associated with Pureology’s Shampoo and Hair Conditioner bottles by examining multiple phases of the product life cycle, including the sourcing of raw materials used for the products and packaging; the production and manufacturing of the products and packaging; transportation and distribution of finished products; and the end-of-life disposal of the packaging.  While the impacts associated with customer use and disposal of the formula were examined, these findings were not included in the final LCA results. The LCA specifically examined how these changes impact energy and water use, two areas that have been the primary focus of Pureology’s sustainability efforts.

Overall, the LCA demonstrated that the improvements Pureology made to its Hydrate Shampoo and Hair Conditioner packaging are resulting in less energy and water use:
- Energy Use:
o  33% decrease in energy use during the packaging production and transportation life cycle phases for Hydrate Shampoo

o  42% decrease in energy use for Hydrate Conditioner over the same life cycle phases

-Water Use:
o  37% reduction in water use during the packaging production and transportation life cycle phases for Hydrate Shampoo

o  38% decrease in water use for the Hydrate Conditioner during the same life cycle phases.

“From our LCA, we discovered that the greatest environmental impact involves the volume of water used by consumers during showering, assuming they are shampooing and conditioning their hair in the shower, and the energy used to heat the water – 99% of the water used during the lifetime of a bottle of Hydrate Shampoo or Conditioner occurs during the use phase,” adds Kalyani.  “While we are working to reduce our own water usage, we will continue to actively work with Global Green USA to educate consumers about water use and conservation.”

-         Limit your time in the shower

-         Run only full loads in washing machines and choose an energy efficient model

-         Fix leaky faucets and toilets immediately.  A small leak from a faucet can waste 50 gallons of water a day; a leaky toilet 260 gallons a day.

-         Install high efficiency faucets and toilets. Fitting low-flow attachments to faucets can save a massive 70% of water when washing hair!

Get LUSH Hair

I may have, on occasion, mentioned my love for LUSH.
Great products, great company, awesome packaging, entertaining catalogs, Canadians... What's not to love?
In the last year, I have gone on a LUSH hair odyssey.
My hair now loves me for it!

Top 3 LUSH shampoos... so far
1. Godiva- Like the Lady, not the chocolate. Shea & Cocoa buttery goodness make this solid shampoo superb, the jasmine smell is irresistible.
2. Seanik- Lemon and jasmine and seaweed, oh my! Go-to solid shampoo for traveling and summer living.
3. Cynthia Sylvia Stout- Fun to say, amazing to use. Calms frizz-prone hair during times of high-humidity, and smells incredible.

Match with a LUSH conditioner & you'll be good to go!
I like leave-in treatment R&B when my hair is dry, Veganese is nice when you just need a bit of a creaminess.

The website is nice & easy-to-use, but if you happen to be in the proximity of a store, go & smell everything. They even let you try stuff. And the people tend to be very helpful and enthusiastic.

LUSH: Cynthia Sylvia Stout Shampoo

Cynthia Sylvia Stout Shampoo-- sounds like a tongue-twister, works like a dream!
It seems as though LUSH can't make a bad product.
Doesn't smell like beer as in day-after-cleaning-from-the-party, just lemony and spicy and frothy.
Thoroughly cleans without leaving me with straw-hair.
It has been muggy, rainy, and gross here for the last two weeks-- Cynthia Sylvia Stout + Living Proof Frizz-Free conditioner= no humidity 'fro for me!

LUSH hair-- for real!

Did you know that LUSH makes haircare?

Yes, I'm getting to this party a bit late, but I get so involved with the soaps that I don't notice anything else-- like the very pleasant hour I spent with a strange boy in Toronto, just smelling the soaps.

When I got the Godiva shampoo bar, I was thinking chocolate. It's not.
That was the only even mildly disappointing thing about this.
The jasmine scent is delicious, your bathroom & your hair will smell tropical and wonderful. The recommended usage for the bar is to rub it on your head, but I prefer to lather it in my hands and wash my hair that way. I guess it's just the control freak in me. Lathers well and rinses easily. Leaves hair wonderfully clean & soft. I'm hooked!
Add to that-- no plastic bottles, so no waste. Just phenomenal hair.

After getting my hair all nice & clean, a good conditioner is vital.
I like a leave-in-- less shower time, easier to comb, fights frizz.
However, many leave-ins leave my hair either dry or oily. Dry hair is no good, I am not a fan of the straw-head look. Oily is even worse-- can make my neck break out (ewwww).
LUSH's R&B is the perfect middle ground, just like baby bear's porridge! My hair is so happy, and combing is so much easier. I would have named it Magic Smoothing Cream, cause that's what it is. And it smells lovely. Economical, too, as a little bit goes a long way. I just dip the tip of a finger into the pot and use that.

Just as well I didn't catch on to the Haircare at the LUSH store in Toronto, as I'm sure hauling a trailer full of product across the border wouldn't have been practical. Now, the power of Internet shopping can enable everyone to have great LUSH hair!

Redken goes natural

Redken has launched a new collection-- Nature’s Rescue. The products are paraben-free, sulfate-free and silicone-free haircare essentials, with plant and marine extracts, that remove impurities and buildup while helping nourish hair.

The shampoo really cleans without over-cleaning. Great de-junker.

The Polish is the coolest thing-- exfoliation for your scalp! Not too rough, but a super-scrub. Better scalp=better hair!

And the conditioner is very nice, cooling on your melon, feels light, but leaves hair soft and well-conditioned.

A+ for Redken!

Philosophy - Pink Frosted Layer Cake

Philosophy
Pink Frosted Layer Cake
High-Foaming Shampoo, Shower Gel, & Bubble Bath

One word - YUM! I love starting my morning with this delicious smelling potion. It makes the day that much better. I have been mostly using it as a shower gel, but it definitely works well as shampoo and gives some flavor to an extra bubbly bath. Makes me think of celebrating birthdays when I was younger. I haven't run across a scent that Philosophy makes that I don't enjoy. My advice: buy it as a stocking stuffer this Holiday season!

Emmett Cooper Haircare Colour Support Wash (shampoo)

From BrownSquared:

My husband and I do everything together. Luckily, he is blonde, and I am brunette at the moment, so we were able to try both varieties of this product.

He said: If you can get over the fact that this stuff is purple, it's a really great shampoo. I hate going to the salon, so I was pumped about having my highlights last a little longer. It not only made them stick around a while, but made them more noticeable. I'd use this again. And again.

She said: The first few days I used the Brunette Shampoo, I had at least four women at work ask me if I colored my hair again. It gave my blonde-dyed-brown hair a color boost, which is awesome, since I'm addicted to constantly coloring my hair. I'd use this regularly to stretch out salon visits.

Redken

Review from Emily:
-Redken Color Protect shampoo and conditioner: Both worked well, shampoo cleaned, conditioner moisturized without adding too much weight.
I like a little heavier conditioner, but would recommend, especially to someone coloring their hair red or another color that fades quickly.

Rahua Hair Care

I tested the Rahua Shampoo & Conditioner.
I may be in love. The shampoo really cleans, but there's no stripped-hair feeling. The conditioner is thick & creamy & leaves my hair soft! I have thick, yet oily, & often times frizzy hair. Finding products that really work is very rare. Both products have a light anise & nutty scent--kind of anise-liquor next to a bottle of amaretto. I highly recommend it!
As an added bonus, there's even a contest the company is running: the winner will receive a trip for two at Luna Runtun Adventure Spa in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest!
Order & enter the sweepstakes at amazonbeautysecret.com.

Alterna Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner

Alterna
Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner

Can you believe this shampoo and conditioner is made of caviar extracts and seasilk? Crazy, huh? It has a lovely scent and is thick and creamy. I am not sure what happens to hair when it ages (besides turning gray), but this stuff does wonders. Every time I used the conditioner, someone told me that my hair looked really good. My hair felt smooth, looked über shiny, and was very manageable. Caviar or not, I am all about the Alterna haircare.

emmett cooper HAIRCARE
volume wash - shampoo

Smells like delicious green apples right out of the bottle. Thick and rich. My hair feels clean and revitalized. Great for limp and thin hair. It can be used every day, but I prefer to keep it for the weekends! I give it 5 stars.

Good Ol' Head & Shoulders

From Cat:

Head & Shoulders Itchy Scalp

Back to my itchy scalp woes... It's driving me crazy. I find myself with a new nightly ritual - 30 minutes of scalp scratching - yuck! I tried fancy, and now I'm trying the "tried and true" - Head & Shoulders from the drug store. So far, so good. Much less itching, much happier girl. I got the 2-in-1, mostly because I was being cheap. My hair is pretty much the same, just a little more body. I'll trade a bit of sleekness for a scratch-free existence. I hate that the parent company is an animal tester though, so we'll see what I can find that works and isn't a torture device for our bunny friends. To be continued...

Palmer's Olive Oil Shampoo & Conditioner

From Eleasha:
Palmer's Olive Oil Formula Replenishing Conditioner
Palmer's Olive Oil Formula Smoothing Shampoo
I love them both. I got them to me at the perfect time because I was looking for a good shampoo. You probably don't know much about my hair type, but it can be tough to find a shampoo to really clean my hair since I have to add oil every other day or so, but with this shampoo my hair felt squeaky clean after just a couple washes. The conditioner leaves it feeling soft and moisturized.

Philip Kingsley -Take Comfort

I started working out this year, and ever since joining the gym, have noticed that the back of my head itches. Repeatedly assured by my mom/resident RN that I do not have cooties, I consulted my hair stylist. She was personally familiar with my little ailment, and said it was due to the sanitizer we use to wipe down the weight machines. The germa-phobe in me is stronger than my hair pride/vanity, so easing up on sanitizer is not gonna happen.
Take Comfort is a 3-piece kit consisting of Flaky and Itchy Scalp Shampoo, Moisture Balancing Conditioner, and Flaky and Itchy Scalp Tonic. I used them all over one weekend. My scalp itched a little less, but my hair was first greasy and limp, and then limp and too soft. I have a stylized bob and hair that has a natural wave, which I fight back with a flat iron. There is such a thing as too soft. The itch was diminished, but this time, hair pride won out. I'm back to good hair and itchy scalp. Thank Goodness - no dandruff.

Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray

moved from lotions & potions
Thursday, March 20, 2008

Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray
So, you may not understand if you wash your hair every day, but this "dirty hair spray" is awesome. Spray it on, brush it out (I prefer to use a comb) and your hair looks and smells clean! I may be down to washing once a week! I would like to compare different brands, I know Bumble and Bumle make a similar product, but I really liked this.
