Holiday Hair and Skin Help

The holiday season is full of cheer – but unfortunately it can often bring unwanted stress! AVEENO® experts, Celebrity Hairstylist, Patrick Melville and dermatologist, Dr. Debra Jaliman, share tips, tricks and advice to get you through the holiday season in stride.

Patrick Melville’s quick how-to for achieving polished party hair (low chignon):
1. Blow-dry hair with Mason Pearson Brush or round brush, when hair is dry, spray hair with the AVEENO® Dry Shampoo at the root to create texture
2. Take a small tail comb and tease very gently at the root throughout the head, flip hair upside down and break up hair with your finger
3. Grab hair at the nape and secure with hair tie, this should create a little texture and softness around your face
4. With the tailcomb, gently tease the ponytail to create more texture, spin ponytail around to create a chignon at nape of neck and secure with a straight pin or bobby pin
5. Break up with fingers on the bottom, use a lightweight hairspray to secure in place, finish with a sparkly headband or clip
Dr. Debra Jaliman’s go-to skincare secrets for skin glowing throughout the holidays:
·         After a night out, it's easy to go to sleep without wanting to stop and wash your face. Dr. Jaliman suggests the AVEENO® Ultra -Calming Makeup Removing Wipes to make it easy to clean your face post-party. Keep them by your bedside for quick, mild yet effective cleansing
· This time of year can be so stressful with holiday shopping and family commitments, what better way to relieve the stress then with a bath? Dr. Jaliman recommends the AVEENO® Stress Relief Foaming Bath, which is made with lavender for a calming effect and oatmeal for moisturizing and soothing the skin.
· To erase holiday stress that can leave skin dull, Dr. Jaliman recommends the AVEENO® Positively Radiant® Skin Brightening Scrub to combat clogged pores and overall facial dullness. This scrub will improve the skin's texture and brightness without irritation on even the most delicate skin

I am slightly obsessed.

My suggestion to make it even better: a spray bottle.

Spring Cleaning... for your hair

From Suzanne Quinn, Glow Communications:

Spring is synonymous with life – plants start to grow, leaves pop, animals give birth…so if hair looks like old man winter, it’s not a pretty sight!
Patrick McIvor, Matrix Artistic Director, offers spring cleaning tips to awaken hair after the long, dark, dry winter months.

  • Get sun kissed highlights – nothing makes a girl feel better than a little color.
  • Apply a clear glaze to make hair shine – salons provide it as a service and DIY brands offer clear glazes as well.  It magnifies color and helps reduce frizz too!
  • Hydrate with a moisturizing treatment - whether it’s a professional back bar treatment like Matrix Total Results Total Treat Deep Cream Mask or an at home deep conditioner, hair will be revitalized.
  • Try a new look – get a trim for fresh ends, play with layers, or frame the face with new fringe  (soft and side swept or chunky and straight across).
  • Style for spring – it’s getting warmer, try a funky braid, low side ponytail or a messy bun.

“After the long winter months, it’s amazing how we can find joy in the simple things in life…like a good hair day!” says McIvor.

Bigen Semi-Permanent Hair Color

I tried Light Cognac & Darkest Brown.
Application is opposite the usual-- you put it on freshly washed, wet hair.
Colors are good, doesn't dry-out hair or make it smell.
The Darkest Brown worked well with my dark brown hair, but seemed to fade quickly.
The Light Cognac made me look like I had gotten highlights.
Overall, I liked.
Good variety of colors, too.

The Blow Dry Is Back

The blow dry is back and it’s better than ever!  Super sleek is a given, and texture and volume are an option. Sam Villa, Founding Partner of the Sam Villa® Brand and Education Artistic Director for Redken 5th Avenue, says the best finishes, both sleek and textured, can be achieved by following these simple Do’s and Don’ts.

The E-T.C. Light Professional Ionic Hair Dryer exclusively for Sam Villa is a quiet, compact (only 18 cm long), incredibly light (less than a pound) dryer that has a patented Evolution-Turbo Compressor that delivers intense power quietly and an ergonomic design to reduces muscle strain. It has built in ceramic/tourmaline ion generation for maximum shine and frizz reduction, features two heat settings and two speed settings, and a cool shot button to lock in styles and promote luster. It’s definitely a “Do!”

Want more sheen?  Spray hair with a heat protectant product like Redken iron silk 07 and pass with a flat iron to seal the cuticle and increase shine.

Want it to last longer?  Use a small amount of baby powder or a dry shampoo at the scalp instead of washing hair everyday.  It absorbs oil, which also helps to elevate roots for more volume.

Winterize your locks

The one word to keep in mind this winter when it comes to your hair is, MOISTURIZE!

Static cling, dull finish, split ends... these are all the results of dehydrated hair.
With a few simple tips from Pureology Colour Care Ambassador Natasha Sunshine, you can keep your hair looking great all winter long.

1. Keep a bottle of Evian spray in your purse. They come in a mini size so they're easy to lug around. A light blast of water can help with static or even hat head. Afraid of messing up your blowdry? Don't worry. Do an all over light mist from about 12" away, then smooth your flat palms over your hair.

2. Condition, condition, condition. You'll want to go for a daily conditioner with extra moisture during our driest months. Plus, a once a week conditioning masque for five minutes will give you that extra dose of hydration your hair needs. Try Pureology's Hydrate Conditioner and Hydrate HydraWhip Masque.

3. When it comes to styling, be sure to lock in moisture by using a leave-in conditioner and a deeply nourishing styler. Pureology's MiracleFiller is a leave in that will give you a supple dose of protein while hydrating the hair as well. Choose a wet/dry styler like Redken's Argan-6. This incredibly light oil goes on wet and melts over the hair in a protective shine while blowdrying. You can add a couple drops after your style is complete to get extra shine, nourishment and protection.

4. Stay away from too many hot tools. If you're going to blowdry, skip the iron and vice versa. If you opt for the flat or curling iron, go to bed with a wet head and style in the morning.

7 Second Hair Dos and Don'ts

From UNITE Hair’s 7Seconds products – Dry Shampoo and Leave-in-Conditioner – here are7 Hair DOS and DON’TS to guarantee a great hair day:

DO…
1 – Keep it Simple: Opting for less is usually more, so skip the trendy crimped hair look and style a chic chignon or ponytail instead.

2 – Add Bling: If you want to accessorize your hair, use a sparkly hair clip for an ode to old Hollywood glamour.

3 – Skip a Day: Skipping a hair wash? Be sure to use 7Seconds Dry ($28.75: Unitehair.com) that is made with fine clay and can instantly remove excess oil, increase volume and refresh hair without the use of water or a trace of visible powder.

4 – Undone Waves: Embrace your waves for an undone effortless style.

5 – Go for Natural Color: If you’re a natural brunette or a blonde, do enhance your color with highlights that are within 2 levels of your natural hue.

6 – Deep Treat: Once a week, apply a deep treatment to maintain healthy and shiny tresses.

7 –Bring a Photo: If you are trying to find a new style, bring along a photo to your stylist for inspiration.

DON’T…
1 –Smother Your Strands: Don't tie your hair back too tightly and never when it is wet. This stretches the hair shaft, causing it to break and split.

2 – Apply Too Much Product: Letting hair air dry before applying product will allow you to see where your hair really needs product, without overdoing it. Sometimes less is more!

3 – Be Afraid of Extensions: Using extensions can give you a new look – without commitment Try Great Lengths Extensions – unlike other hair extension systems, the integrity of one's natural strands is never compromised, so the only risk one takes by having them applied is looking better than before.

4 – Forget to Protect: Going to be in the sun? Use a heat styling tool more than once a week? Spray 7Seconds Condition ($26.25: Unitehair.com) onto hair - this leave-in conditioner locks in color, detangles in 7 seconds, and offers both UV and thermal protection for all hair textures.

5 – Overdo Braids: Keep your braid simple - opt for one loose fishtail braid or incorporate a loose side braid.

6 – Damage your Hair: Visit your stylist every 4-8 weeks (depending on your hair texture – curlier locks can wait longer) to get a trim. Your hair style will look healthier and last longer.

7 – Follow Every Trend: Work with your stylist to find a style that works just for you.

Get LUSH Hair

I may have, on occasion, mentioned my love for LUSH.
Great products, great company, awesome packaging, entertaining catalogs, Canadians... What's not to love?
In the last year, I have gone on a LUSH hair odyssey.
My hair now loves me for it!

Top 3 LUSH shampoos... so far
1. Godiva- Like the Lady, not the chocolate. Shea & Cocoa buttery goodness make this solid shampoo superb, the jasmine smell is irresistible.
2. Seanik- Lemon and jasmine and seaweed, oh my! Go-to solid shampoo for traveling and summer living.
3. Cynthia Sylvia Stout- Fun to say, amazing to use. Calms frizz-prone hair during times of high-humidity, and smells incredible.

Match with a LUSH conditioner & you'll be good to go!
I like leave-in treatment R&B when my hair is dry, Veganese is nice when you just need a bit of a creaminess.

The website is nice & easy-to-use, but if you happen to be in the proximity of a store, go & smell everything. They even let you try stuff. And the people tend to be very helpful and enthusiastic.

Home Hair Color How-To from Paul Cucinello

Read these must-know tips from Paul Cucinello, Beauty Expert and Creative Director of the Chris Chase Salon in Chelsea!

Rich Chocolate Brown
AKA The Katie Holmes, a rich brown always calls for a semi-permanent color in a neutral tone. Permanent colors tend to pull too much red because the peroxide in the product brings out the natural warmth in your hair. I suggest trying L’Oreal Healthy Look Crème Gloss Color.
Pro Tip:  After applying the color to your roots be sure to refresh your ends. To richen up faded color without over processing (or achieving a darker result than desired) pick up an extra box of color and mix the included deep conditioning treatment into the color and developer mixture. This will dilute the color so it stays sheer and deposits just enough to refine the tone. Apply it to the ends and leave it on for up to ten minutes.

Blonde Bombshell
Blondes can be tricky because most at-home hair colors yield a much more golden result than people are looking for. Don't choose a shade that's too far from your natural color and remember that the color on your roots should be slightly deeper than the ends like Jessica Simpson. Select an ash shade if you want a more neutral result. Unless your natural color is VERY pale, avoid anything that is labeled “Golden” ...chances are you will wind up unhappy.
Pro Tip: Is your blonde feeling "blah"?  Brighten up your color with an at home brightening product. It's a great way to kick your color up a notch without frying your ends. It can also soften the look of re-growth. Try John Frieda Go Blonder Controlled Lightening Spray.

Sun Kissed Blonde
Although I rarely suggest attempting highlights at home, even adding a streak here or there can sometimes be the difference between a costly trip to the salon or a great night out! Using a tail comb, try carefully selecting a few pieces around your hairline that are no thicker than a half of a centimeter. To get a highlighted look like Hilary Duff, place the hair in foil and paint your highlighting color on each piece until they are thoroughly saturated. Try using L'Oreal Couleur Experte 8.2 in Iced Meringue.
Pro Tip: Be sure to keep checking your highlights to make sure they get light enough. Here's where most people make mistakes: You can always tone highlights down if they get too light, but if a highlight isn't light enough after you rinse, unfortunately the only way to correct it will be to re-color each piece again.

Dark & Mysterious Black
Kim Kardashian amps up the sex appeal with her signature black mane. It's super shiny and mysterious. This shade is easily achieved on hair that's already dark, so very gentle color should be used to ensure that it doesn't wind up looking like shoe polish. You can select any shade from “dark brown” to “blue black” depending on your skin tone. Try Revlon Colorsilk in Soft Black.
Pro Tip: If you choose to dye your hair black, know this: it's a long road back so make sure you're ready for a long term commitment. I'm a big fan of using gloss to try color on first and then when you're ready for a major commitment and want to bump up the intensity switch to a semi- permanent color.

Flaming Hot Red
Nothing looks worse than a really fake red.  Stick with colors that can occur in nature, just like Adele. Choose natural reds that are more golden or copper (avoid cool, cherry tones). Reds should also be somewhat uniform, so don't be tempted to try adding highlights to a rich red base. If you're a blonde and you want to try copper hues, use a semi-permanent color in strawberry blonde. I suggest trying Couture Color Luxeblend Créme Color in Strawberry Blonde.
Pro Tip: If your hair is naturally dark and you want to achieve a soft, coppery shade, try using a golden blonde permanent color instead of an actual red.  The result will be warm and coppery without looking too artificial.

Also, be sure to protect your skin while coloring your hair at-home. Grab your favorite moisturizer and apply a generous amount to your hairline, the tips of your ears and the nape of your neck to avoid staining.

Get your perfect hair with a little help from the stars

Bringing in a picture of your favorite celebrity hair can help!

Stylists have their fair share of celebrity photos presented, but a good stylist uses it as a communication tool to hone in on a client’s lifestyle so they can create a look that’s a good fit. Krista Beahm, stylist at patrick mcivor color studio, sees stacks of pics, and believe it or not, they pretty much fit into five categories.  Keeping these groups top of mind can help make a match in heaven.

Magnificent Mom: No fuss and is always in a rush, but wants to look good.  May rock the ponytail a bit too much and needs an alternative with minimum styling effort. Think Jessica Alba, Katie Homes. Tip: A product like Matrix Design Pulse Thermo Glide Express Blow Out Crème is good for moms because it helps reduce drying time.  After shampooing, rub a dime size amount in hands and distribute evenly throughout hair and blow dry as usual.

Bohemian/Natural:  Loose, soft curls and waves, earthy and carefree, digs simple hair accessories like head bands and flowers.  Doesn’t mind putting a little effort into styling, but it can’t look like it. Think Blake Lively and Ashley Olsen.  Tip: Section hair from ear to ear, clip rest of hair out of the way, and spray with Matrix Vavoom Gold Heat Iron-In Control Protective Dry Mist to protect against heat damage before curling with iron. Then, section from brow bone to brow bone and repeat.

Edgy: Stylish with a unique flair, likes to stand out in a crowd and make a bold statement that gets them noticed. Will put the time into styling hair if the results are worth it.  Think Katy Perry, Rihanna and Megan Fox.  Tip: Molding paste is great for making hair textured and edgy.   Try Matrix Design Pulse Messy Couture Molding Paste - rub a small amount of product around fingertips, and run through ends and swirl around sections to create edgy texture.

Polished: Red carpet ready at all times, not one hair out of place.  Will try new looks if it suits their personal style and will spend a lot of time devoted to achieving the perfect look.  Think Kate Bosworth and Jennifer Lopez. Tip: Polished looks need to hold for hours and products like Matrix Total Results Sleek Blow Down Leave In- Cream holds for 24, so every hair stays in place!   Apply a nickel size amount evenly throughout hair and blow dry. Finish with a drop or two of Matrix Total Results Sleek Silk Wonder Smoothing Oil for a great shine.

World Traveler: Always on the go, yet always looks great whether they’re boarding or deplaning. Savvy – they have inside scoop (from their stylists, of course) on styling tricks that take them from day to night, plane to event or meeting to photo shoot.  Think Angelina Jolie and Kim Kardashian.  Tip: Reworking and freshening hair is important for travelers, so a product like Matrix Design Pulse Fiber Shuffle Fibrous Play Paste is great because it stays pliable and hair and be reworked throughout the day…and night. To use, apply product to fingers tips and work through dry hair to style. Later in the day or after a flight, simply rework hair to freshen.

Sam Villa E.T.C. Light Professional Ionic Dryer

I was pumped to try this because I've heard ionic dyers are great for fine, thin hair. Low and behold, it worked. The dryer gave my hair some much-needed oomph and volume. The stream of heat is not too hot, which is great because heat is hair's enemy, right? And I love the rubbery feeling of the dryer and handle for easy gripping. It has 2 heat and speed settings-great for bangs since they don't need to be blasted. Out with my old dryer and in with this new one!

New from LUSH

From the great minds at LUSH:
LUSH is known for the frothy fun it brings to bathtubs and showers, but we get serious when it comes to giving good hair. All of our hair care products have a trained trichologist behind them, our founder Mark Constantine. Trichology is the scientific study of the hair and scalp, which includes the identification, diagnosis and treatment of hair and scalp conditions. LUSH is interested in TREATING problems, not just masking them - although we do like to mask the hair with nutritious ingredients from time to time. In an effort to help you manage your mane, we’ve created three limited edition haircare gifts launching in LUSH stores and www.LUSH.com on July 18th for the most common hair conditions.

VOLUME AND SHINE: Take hair up a couple of notches with our Volume and Shine set. Our Big shampoo uses sea salt to conjure up more volume than you thought was possible while our lightweight Veganese conditions without flattening hair. Switch it up with our Ultimate Shine shampoo bar and Marilyn hair treatment for shiny hair you can see from miles away.
  • Contents: Marilyn, Big Shampoo, Ultimate Shine Shampoo Bar, Veganese Conditioner
PROTECT AND NOURISH: If your hair is a frizzy, dry or simply out-of-control, this is the set for you. Curly Wurly shampoo shows hair who’s boss with coconut and vanilla while Jasmine and & Henna Fluff Eaze smoothes with jojoba and Brazil nut oil. R&B revives and balances misbehaving hair and Jungle conditioner keeps everything tame.

Red Door Hair Help for Summer

Skip the frizz and unwanted bulk and volume with these hair styling tips from top stylist - Zahir Ziani, the National Creative Director at Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas – A Luxury Day Spa & Hair Salon.

· Don’t touch! – Playing or touching your hair can loosen the style out of its shape and create friction causing hair to expand, increasing volume and frizz

· Be cool – Skip blow drying and heated styling tools when you can in the summer. Excess heat can your damage hair cuticles and cause parched, frizzy hair

· Go long – When temperatures and humidity are at their highest, control your hair by keeping it long and heavy. The trick I use with all my clients is to add in curl to the ends with a roller so hair becomes “anchored” or weighed down

· Accept change – The texture of your hair will fluctuate with the seasons, so the products you use in spring may not be effective for smoothing hair and taming frizz during summer. The Kerastase BAIN OLÉO-RELAX is a perfect summertime beauty essential!

· Wear SPF – Hair, like skin, needs protection from harmful UV exposure. Look for hair care brands that offer sun protection with a minimum of SPF 15. Also similar to your skin, use hair care products formulated with antioxidant vitamins (A, C, E) to prevent against free radical damage. Add a vitamin B complex supplement to your beauty regimen to maintain health, shiny hair all year long

· Bounce-back – Use fabric-wrapped elastics; they are gentle on your hair and less likely to cause breakage and frizz. If you only wear non-metal elastics, do not wrap it around your hair more than twice. Before you go to bed, remove any elastic gently, as it can tangle hair during the night

Last but not least, make sure you visit your hair stylist at the start of every season to make sure you have the right cut and products to maintain smooth, shiny hair.
