Help stop sun damage, save the kids skin!

Did you even know that Sunscreen is banned in schools???
Read up on the craziness & how you can help:

Suncare CEO Launches Project Backpack™: Concern for School Sunscreen Safety Incites Action from Supergoop! Founder and CEO, Holly Thaggard
NEW YORK, NY (May 14, 2012) –Kids aren’t getting the sunscreen message.  According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, unprotected sun exposure during childhood and early adult years significantly increases a child’s chance of developing skin cancer; yet, in a survey conducted by The Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, only 25% of students said they “often or always” use sunscreen when outside for at least six hours in the summer.

“The time to start incorporating SPF into your daily skincare regimen is during the school years.  This is a very important time to get these positive messages to children as it will influence health behaviors later in life,” says Holly Thaggard, Founder and CEO of Supergoop!.

However, sunscreens are prohibited from public schools in America as the FDA regulates them as over- the-counter drugs. Presently, California is the only state to allow the use of sunscreen during the school day without a physician’s note or prescription.

Launching nationwide May 2012, Project Backpack™ serves as a vehicle to influence a change in state policies, allowing the use of sunscreen on school campuses, while simultaneously providing sunscreen to schools across the United States. For every SPF 30 Everyday UV Lotion sold, Supergoop! will donate one backpack-sized sunscreen to one of its partner schools in the U.S.. This year, the goal is to provide sunscreen for 30,000 – 40,000 students (K – 12) in approved partner schools, starting in California.

The idea for Project Backpack™ arose when Holly’s daughter came home from her first grade class prior to an outdoor field trip with a note in her backpack stating that any sunscreen included in a child’s backpack would be discarded. Although aware the law prohibiting sunscreens in schools existed, the incident served as a catalyst to officially launchProject Backpack™.

“As a parent I was upset and as a suncare professional, I was discouraged that sun protection laws are so antiquated,” said Thaggard. “How does a law exist that prohibits the use of sunscreen at school? I decided that there needed to be an effective platform for concerned parents to contest such counterintuitive legislation.” Through this campaign, Supergoop! hopes to teach sun safety while also providing children with the necessary sun protection to encourage early adoption of healthy skincare habits.

Dermatologist Joel Schlessinger, MD, past president of American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery and founder ofLovelySkin.com, states, “Safe sun exposure is essential at every age. It is imperative that we break habits such as going on the playground unprotected. Project Backpack has identified one area where sun exposure regrettably is nearly unavoidable due to current school rules. As a dermatologist, I feel this type of program is fantastic and will serve our most precious asset, our kids, well.”

Make a difference and supportProject Backpack™ by purchasing Supergoop’s SPF 30 Everyday UV Lotion at retailers nationwide, nominating and advocating the program in your child’s school, “liking” theProject Backpack™ campaign on Facebook, and/or signing a petition on Supergoop.com/projectbackpack.

Sunscreen FAQs answered

I have been coating myself with sunscreen every morning since the age of 14. We don't even want to hazard a guess at the number of gallons involved. But has it been enough? I have questions, you have questions, we all have questions. Who has the answers? Let's check with a top dermatologist!

From Dr. Michael Gold, dermatologist and dermasurgeon:

My question for Dr. Gold: I work in an office with no windows (yes, it is not great). I apply sunblock in the morning, around 6 am. Do I need to re-apply before my drive home at 3:30 pm?

    • His answer: "I would say definitely yes – especially since there is still plenty of sun in the afternoon – especially in the summer.  The best defense we have for skin cancer prevention is sunscreen and we know that it  does not last all day, so even if you were inside without windows all day I would recommend reapplying before you leave at the end of the day."

Other Questions answered:
  • If I wear moisturizer with SPF 15 everyday is it going to be enough for the summer?
    • I would recommend an SPF of 30 minimum, but use a sunscreen as well.
  • Should I try to find a moisturizer with a higher SPF or do I need to wear a sunscreen and forget moisturizer altogether?
    • Moisturizing the skin, especially in summer, is essential. Aim for moisturizer and a sunscreen.
  • What if I have acne-prone skin?  Does non-comedogenic sunscreen really work?
    • For the most part, yes.  If it is non-comedogenic, it has no active acne-causing ingredients.  This will be great for almost everyone who has acne, acne-prone skin, or even sensitive skin.  However, it is not a perfect science – someone will be breaking out even with these labels.
  • Why do I tend to feel greasy even with oil-free sunscreen on?
    • Because most sunscreens have ingredients which, on certain people, make their skin feel oily – not much you can do about it – trial and error to determine which ones will not make you oily.
  • Can you recommend some specific sunscreens that are good for summer?
    • I like Coppertone Sport 50 (they have 30-100) – it is a spray and I like sprays.  Others would be Neutrogena Ultimate Sport Spray – up to SPF 100 – we want them to be UVB and UVA – both of these are.
  • What SPF should I be looking for?
    • SPF 30 or above – if skin cancer or pre-skin cancer history – I usually recommend SPF 50 or above --- plus broad spectrum, covering UVA and UVB.
  • Is the recommended SPF different for face and body?
    • No – it is okay to use the same for both.
  • I want to protect the area under my eyes. Is it safe and effective to simply use a moisturizer with SPF on that area or do I need a totally new product?
    • Yes, if the moisturizer has a sufficient SPF.

Why do we love Dr. Graf? She wants to save our skin & our children!

Check it out:

Did you know that between 50% and 80% of one’s lifetime sun exposure occurs before the age of 18? And that the earlier you begin to protect your child’s skin against sun damage, the sooner you begin to reduce his or her risk of developing skin cancer? Just as you teach your children to make brushing their teeth a daily habit, teaching them good sun safety habits will go a long way in keeping their skin healthy.

In this segment of Ask Dr.Graf—PLAY IT SAFE IN THE SUN: HOW TO PROTECT THE LITTLE ONES—we’ll look at simple ways to safeguard your child’s skin before you go out the door and while you’re enjoying the outdoors. From protective clothing specially treated to provide optimal SPF levels to child-friendly sunscreens, to the rules of safe sunning, such as the importance of reapplying sunscreen, and the need to be sun-smart even on a cloudy day, Dr.Graf covers all the basics. Follow her advice and you and the whole family will have fun in the sun while practicing the habits that will help prevent sunburn and minimize the risk of skin cancer.

The same golden rules of sunprotection we teach our kids also apply to us throughout adulthood. We all know the statistics: According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, more than 3.5 millionskin cancers in over 2 million people are diagnosed annually. And one in fiveAmericans will develop skin cancer over the course of a lifetime. Anotherreason to practice safe sun: up to 90% of the signs of skin aging, such aswrinkles, brown spots and rough, leathery texture, are the result of over exposure to UV rays.

All the more reason for a refreshercourse in sun protection. In this segment of Ask Dr. Graf—THE BASICS OF SUNSAFETY FOR SKIN CANCER PREVENTION AND ANTI-AGING—Dr. Graf gives an overview ofwhat you need to help keep skin wrinkle-free longer and to protect against skincancer. How to choose the most effective sunscreen formula, the right way toapply your sunscreen for the best results, what level of SPF provides optimalprotection as the seasons change and more—it’s all here.

Monday, May 2 is Melanoma Monday

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

Who better to raise awareness than dermatologist and melanoma survivor Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi?

Dr. Tanzi, who diagnosed herself with early melanoma and basal cell carcinoma at 37, will ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Monday, May 2, 2011 to heighten awareness.

Dr. Tanzi's Top 10 Summer Skin Safety Tips:
  1. Get an annual full body screening from your dermatologist at least once a year.
  2. Perform a self-skin exam every 1-2 months-- skin cancer detection is best done as team work between you and your dermatologist.
  3. Avoid the sun during peak hours from 10 am-2 pm.
  4. Liberally apply a broad-spectrum SPF that blocks both UVA and UVB rays every 3-4 hours when in direct sunlight.
  5. ABSOLUTELY NO TANNING BEDS, EVER!!!
  6. Look for SPF products that contain zinc and/or titanium because they offer good protection without irritation.
  7. Try double duty powder sunscreens because they apply like pressed powder so your skin looks great and is adequately protected from the sun. The built-in brush makes application easy on the go.
  8. Although you can't reverse sun damage from past sun abuse, it's important to continue proper sun protection strategies throughout a lifetime because the negative effects from the sun on the skin are cumulative.
  9. If a mole has changed in size, shape, or color, it needs to be checked right away.
  10. For all skin cancer questions, the best online resource is the Skin Cancer Foundation.
